Sangakkara to Retire from Test Cricket

Bhubaneswar: Kumar Sangakkara, the top batsman of Sri Lanka will retire from Test cricket. He said that by the end of August when Sri Lanka will host India in a three-match series, he will be retired.

He already announced retirement from One-Day International (ODI) and Twenty-20 cricket. He quit the shortest format after winning the World T20 2014. He will quit ODI cricket post the ongoing World Cup.

“There are Test matches in June and July, and I will be done by the end of August. A series or two in June and in August, and that’s it,” left-handed Sangakkara was quoted as saying by espncricinfo.

In 130 Tests, Sangakkara has 12,203 runs, which makes him the fifth highest scorer. Only Sachin Tendulkar (15,921), Ricky Ponting (13,378), Jacques Kallis (13,289) and Rahul Dravid (13,288) are above him in the elite list.

Sangakkara has also scored 38 centuries and 51 half-centuries.

In the ongoing World Cup, Sangakkara has been in top form, hitting consecutive unbeaten tons leading into the Australia match.
The former captain said it was important for both him and the team to build momentum as the tournament progresses.

“I don’t know whether I am top of my game, I just bat according to situations. During the (preceding) New Zealand tour, it was the same thing, I didn’t have a good start in the first ODI but from the second it was just a case of building on runs,” said Sangakkara, a member of the team for past three World Cups.

“The best thing as a senior cricketer you can do is to hold your place in the side and pull your own weight and score runs if you’re a batsman, and if you are a bowler do the job that’s required of you.

“That’s the best way you can help the team or any youngster. As long as you are there and you are doing something useful, they’ll benefit.”

With a total of 15 points, defending champions Waveriders have two wins, losses and draws each to their name. Playing their seventh game, the Sardar Singh-led side will try their best to notch a win and solidify their position in the standings.

“The mistakes committed during the last match are being observed minutely and the boys are working rigorously to improve their game. We have the skills and we can do much better,” Waveriders head coach Cedric D’Souza said.

“We are working towards our attacking strategies and to better our approach during circle penetrations in order to build up as many opportunities as possible. Tomorrow’s match will see our team in better shape”, he added.

On the other hand, with a lone win to their credit, home team Lancers are sitting at the bottom of the league with only nine points and will take to the field with the sole intention of recording a win and ascend in the points table. Lancers and Waveriders have met twice in the previous edition of HIL where the Delhi team won the first match 5-0 and the second one 4-3.

“The team has been training really hard and our aim is to win every match that we play hereon. It is going to be an interesting match as Waveriders are a tough team and as they are the defending champions their sole motive will be to retain the title,” Lancers head coach Jude Felix said.

“We will try and use Waveriders’ previous defeat against Jaypee Punjab Warriors to our benefit as we have learned that though the Waveriders’ squad is pretty strong, there are quite a few loop holes that may prove to be advantageous for us”.

Odisha sprinter dropped from CWG team after doubts over gender...

Bhubaneswar: Dutee Chand, the famous star sprinter from Odisha is now in trouble. There is a double blow for her. First, she had to leave Bangalore, where she was undergoing a national level coaching camp, in a huff after serious doubts over her gender. And another is she found her name struck off the list of athletes bound for the Common Wealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow at the very last minute.

Dutee had to undergo the ignominy of a gender test – the only athlete at the camp to be subjected to one – at the Bangalore camp. Though the result of the test is yet to be released, sports authorities have clearly decided to play it safe and not risk possible embarrassment at the marquee sporting event in Glasgow.
In New Delhi, Sports Authority of India (SAI) Director General (DG) Jiji Thomson confirmed that a ‘woman athlete’ underwent a gender test in Bangalore without naming Dutee.

“A gender test was conducted on a woman athlete in Bangalore. If she is there in the list of CWG participants, her name will have to be deleted from the list,” Thomson said. Within hours of Athletics Federation of India (AFI) secretary CK Valson confirming that Dutee’s name was in the list of 33 athletes selected for the Glasgow Games, the AFI released a revised list of 32 with her name missing. It is surprising that sports authorities in the country decided to subject Dutee to a gender test only now despite the fact that doubts over her gender have persisted for quite some time.

Born in a poor weaver’s family in Jajpur, Dutee was a rare bright spot in the otherwise bleak athletics scene in Odisha, winning several national and international competitions. In the last month, she had won two gold medals, in the 200 metres and 4x400M relay, within a space of just one and a half hours at the 16th Asian Junior Championships in Taipei.

She was also a finalist in the 100M at the World Junior Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, last year and was widely tipped to participate in the World Junior Championships next week in Eugene, Oregon, from July 22 to 27.

Fifa World Cup: Its time for the World to play together..

Bhubaneswar:Its time for the world to play together. The Fifa World Cup 2014 starts from today. About 32 nations will play soccer tournament at Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo. The world will be watching to see who wins the championship.

Although accusations of disrepute hang over FIFA and its officials, it's the players on the field who can restore the World Cup's global shine beginning this week in Brazil, the country that created the legend of the "beautiful game. Fans everywhere will be looking to Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar to show what exceptionally gifted entertainers they are. And if Luiz Felipe Scolari is as good a prophet as he is a coach, the final at the end of this 32-nation, 64-game tournament could end with his Brazilian side facing Argentina in the final in Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazil comes into the tournament they are hosting as one of the overall favorites along with Germany and Argentina as well as defending champion Spain and they have a very exciting team for this tournament. The team won the 2013 Confederations Cup trophy and that was a very big win for the nation as they prepared for the Cup and now they have the chance to open things up with a win against Croatia and that would make advancing out of Group A much easier. The team has Mexico and Cameroon as the other teams in the group and while it is not an easy group by any stretch, it should be no trouble for Brazil to get out of it.

Brazil has won the World Cup five times since then - in Sweden in 1958, in Chile in 1962, in Mexico in 1970, in the United States in 1994 and in Japan in 2002. Each victory came miles from home, and no other country except Spain, the winner in 2010 in South Africa, has won outside of its continent.
The style of Brazil's triumphs, particularly the first three, which all involved the peerless Pele, might have soothed the shock of 1950, what became known as the Maracanazo. But that term, literally the Maracana Blow has been handed down the generations until now.

The team has a number of players to watch apart from Neymar, including Thiago Silva and he is one of the best defensive players in the world and he will have plenty of attention on him. Neymar plays for Barcelona with Lionel Messi and he will be one of the key members of the Brazil squad along with Oscar, who played with Chelsea and this is the 19th appearance for the team in the World Cup.

The first day has Brazil playing Croatia and then on Friday Cameroon and Mexico play to finish off Group A. The Group B matchups start with Spain and the Netherlands and that comes from Salvador on ESPN, while Chile and Australia play the late match at 6 pm ET that day.

Put in to bat, the Kings XI was powered to a strong total of 199/4 by Saha’s maiden and brilliant century after they suffered an early setback. In reply, Pandey’s 94 anchored the 2012 edition champions to victory with only three balls to spare. Vohra scored 67 off 52 balls with six fours and two sixes. Saha, on the other hand, hit an incredible 10 fours and eight sixes in his 55-ball innings with an incredible strike rate of 209.09.

The left hander hammered a six off pacer Mitchell Johnson to bring down the required score to 5 runs from the last over. Chawla needed just three more balls to finish off the match for his side.
